DIX'WELL, John (1608-89). One of the three judges of Charles I. who took refuge in America. He took an active part in the English Revolution as a colonel in the Parliamentary Army, was a member of Parliament for several years, and was one of the court which condemned Charles I. to death. After the accession of Charles II. he fled from England to save his life, and, under the name of John Davids, lived for many years undiscovered in America, for the most part at New Haven, Conn.
