DONALDSON, James Lowry (1814-85). An American soldier. He was born in Baltimore, Md.; graduated at West Point in 1830, and served with distinction in the Florida and Mexican wars. He was chief quartermaster successively of the Department of the Cumberland and of the Military Division of Tennessee during the Civil War, and at its close was brevetted major-general in the regular army. He retired from active service in 1869 and resigned from the armv in 1879. He wrote Sergeant Atkins (1871), a tale of the Florida War.
