DOREMUS, Robert Ogden (1824—). An American chemist, born in New York City. He graduated in 1842 at the New York University, pursued studies in chemistry in Paris in 1847-48, established a chemical laboratory in New York in 1848, and graduated from the medical department of the New York University in 1850. In 1861 he was appointed professor of chemistry and toxicology in the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, and in 1864 professor of chemistry and physics in the College of the City of New York. He patented several chemical processes, including methods of fire-extinguishing.
