EMERSON, Benjamin Kendall (1843—). An American geologist, born at Nashua, N. H., and educated at Amherst College and the universities of Göttingen and Berlin. He became professor of geology at Amherst College in 1872, and was professor of geology and mineralogy at Smith College from 1883 to 1885. He is president of the Geological Society of America. United States assistant geologist, and a fellow and vice-president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of many other learned bodies. For the United States Geological Survey he prepared a number of valuable geological maps of Massachusetts. His publications include geological papers and monographs.
