ENGEL, Joseph (1816-99). An Austrian anatomist, born in Vienna. In 1844 he was appointed to the chair of anatomy at Zurich, and subsequently to that of physiology also. He became professor of pathological anatomy at the University of Prague in 1849, and from 1854 to 1874 was a professor of anatomy in the Josephsakademie for physicians and surgeons at Vienna. His contributions to the development systematization of anatomical science were considerable. In addition to a large number of uncollected articles, he wrote a Lehrbuch der pathologischen Anatomie and a Kompendium der topographischen Anatomie (1859).
