FUNK, fōōṉk, Franz Xavier von (1840—). A Catholic theologian. He was born at Abts-Gmünd, Württemberg, and was educated at Tübingen, at the Seminary of Rottenburg, and in Paris, where he devoted himself chiefly to the study of political economy. In 1870 he was appointed professor of theology at Tübingen. His principal publications are: Opera Patrum Apostolicorum (2d ed. 1901); Lehrbuch der Kirchengeschichte (3d ed. 1898); Kirchengeschichtliche Abhandlungen und Untersuchungen (1897-99).
