HEIS, hīs, Eduard (1806-77). A German astronomer, born at Cologne, and educated at Bonn. He taught at Cologne and Aix-la-Chapelle, and in 1852 was appointed professor of mathematics and astronomy at Münster. Heis edited Wöchentliche Unterhaltungen aus dem Gebiete der Astronomie und Meteorologie, and was author of: Atlas Cœlestis Novus, marking all stars visible to the naked eye (1872); Zodiallicht-Beobachtungen (1875); Sammlung von Beispielen und Aufgaben aus der allgemeinen Arithmetik und Algebra (95th ed. 1896); and, with Schweiler, a Lehrbuch der Geometrie, in three volumes.
