HIRSCHBERG, hḗrsh'bĕrK. A manufacturing town in the Prussian Province of Silesia, situated at the foot of a mountain, 30 miles southwest of Liegnitz (Map: Prussia, F 3). The town is ancient, and is still girt about by a double line of walls. Its Protestant church, a Gothic edifice, is known for its magnitude and its excellent organ. Hirschberg has manufactures of linen, lace, machinery, paper, metal, and tobacco. The town was founded at the beginning of the eleventh century. Population, in 1890, 16,200; in 1900, 17,865, mostly Protestants.
