HOLLEBEN, hṓl'lắben, Theodor von (1838—). A German diplomat. He was born in Stettin, and in 1872 left the Hussars for the diplomatic service. He was Minister to Argentina (1875-85). Envoy to Japan (1885-91), to Washington (1891-93), to Stuttgart (1893-97); and then again to Washington, where he received the rank of Ambassador. After the failure of the German effort to induce President Roosevelt to act as arbitrator in the Venezuelan dispute, von Holleben resigned because of failing health.
