HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, ō̇nē̇′ swä kē̇ mȧl ē̇ päNs (Fr., Evil to him who evil thinks). An exclamation traditionally ascribed to Edward III. It is said to have been uttered at a ball when the King tied about his leg a garter which the Countess of Salisbury dropped while dancing. The words form the motto of the Order of the Garter (q.v.).
