JACKSON. A city and the county-seat of Jackson County, Ohio, 100 miles south by east of Columbus; on the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern, the Columbus, Hocking Valley and Toledo, and the Detroit Southern railroads (Map: Ohio, E 7). Coal and iron mining are the leading industries, and there are iron-furnaces, foundries, a tannery, a woolen-factory, plow-works, etc. Jackson, settled as early as 1795, and incorporated in 1847, is governed by a mayor, elected every two years, and a council. Population, in 1890, 4320; in 1900, 4672.
