KNIGHT, Thomas Andrew (1758-1858). An English horticulturist, born near Ludlow, Hertfordshire. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and subsequently devoted himself to researches in vegetable and animal physiology. In 1795 he published his views on the inheritance of diseases among fruit-trees, which attracted much attention. In addition to many papers, he published a Treatise on the Culture of the Apple and Pear, and on the Manufacture of Cider and Perry (1797), a work which passed through several editions. Many of his papers, with a biographical memoir, were published posthumously under the editorship of Bentham and Lindley, as A Selection from the Physiological and Horticultural Papers Published in the Transactions of the Royal and Horticultural Societies by the Late Thomas Andrew Knight (1841).
