LEOPOLD, lā'ṓ-pōlt, Karl Gustaf af (1756-1829). The Swedish Gottsched (q.v.), bulwark of French Classicism against the attacks of the Romantic Phosphorists. He attempted all forms of poetry save the epic, and approached nearest to distinction in his tragedies Odin (1790) and Virginia (1802).
