MUNSON, mûn'son, James Eugene (1835—). An American inventor, born at Paris, Oneida County, N. Y. He studied for a time at Amherst, then removed to New York City, where he became a court stenographer, a position which he held for more than thirty years. He formulated the Munson system of stenography, an automatic typesetting machine, and a mechanism of operating typewriting machines by telegraph, and published a number of books of phonography.
