SALTONSTALL, sa̤l′ton-sta̤l, Gurdon (1660-1724). A colonial Governor of Connecticut, born at Haverhill, Mass. He graduated at Harvard in 1684, and in 1691 was ordained pastor of the First Church (Congregational), at New London, Conn. He soon became prominent in politics and was elected Governor of Connecticut in 1707, to fill the unexpired term of Governor Winthrop, and was thereafter reëlected until his death. It was largely due to him that Yale was removed from Saybrook to New Haven.
