SPLÜGEN, splụ′gen. An Alpine pass leading between the Tambohorn and the Surettahorn from the Swiss Canton of Grisons into Italy at an altitude of 6946 feet (Map: Italy, D 1). The southern or Italian descent has three great galleries built to protect the road from avalanches, and completed by the Austrian Government in 1834.
