WASHINGTON, University of. A coeducational State institution at Seattle, Wash., founded in 1861. For several years the work of the university did not rank greatly above that of an academy. The first class was graduated in 1876. In 1903 the university had an attendance of 631 in the College of liberal Arts, College of Engineering, the Schools of Mines, Pharmacy, and Law, and the Graduate School. Of these 363 were pursuing the course in liberal arts. In the same year it had a faculty of 37, a library of 16,000 volumes and 12,000 pamphlets, property estimated at $2,000,000, grounds and buildings valued at $300,000, and an income of $275,000. The university grounds cover 355 acres within the city limits.
