WISSOWA, vĭs-sō'vȧ, Georg (1859—). A German classical philologist, born at Breslau, and professor in the University of Halle. He is distinguished for his studies in the field of Roman religion, and was editor of Pauly's Real-Encyklopädie der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft (1892 et seq.). His more important works are: De Veneris Simulacris Romanis (1882); Die Religion der Römer (1901); and Tertulliani Opera, vol. i. (1890). He also edited the second edition of Marquardt's Römische Staatsverwaltung, vol. iii. (1885).
