Douw or Dow, Gerhard, a celebrated Dutch painter, was born at Leyden in 1613. He learned the art of glass-painting, and afterward became a pupil of Rembrandt for some years. He became for a time a portrait-painter, but was slow at his work and had trouble in getting anyone to sit for him. He was very exact in every detail in his paintings, it being said that he spent five days painting a hand, and his work was so fine that he had to make his own brushes. His best works are The Dropsical Women, The Evening School and The Village Grocer's Wife. He died in 1675.
