The New Student's Reference Work/Dow, Neal

Dow, Neal (1804-97), to whom is due the prohibition-law of Maine, was born at Portland in that state. He was famous as a temperance-orator and the founder of temperance-societies in Canada and England as well as in the United States. He fought in the Civil War, and for the greater part of a year was a prisoner in the hands of the Confederates. In 1880 he was the prohibitionist candidate for the presidency.
