East′on, a city of Pennsylvania, county-seat of Northampton County, situated at the meeting of the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers, is a wealthy manufacturing city, 67 miles from Philadelphia. The Delaware, Lehigh and Morris Canal terminates here, and with the rivers and railroads gives Easton a large trade. It also has foundries, rolling-mills, lock-factories, wire and rope-factories. It perhaps is best known as the seat of Lafayette College, whose Anglo-Saxon and Early-English department is one of the best in the country. It received its charter in 1826; and has six courses of study, 45 teachers and 519 students. Population, 28,523.
