Quassia (kwŏsh'ĭ-å), from the name of a negro, Quassy or Quash, who prescribed this article as a specific for fevers — a bitter wood obtained from the various trees of the quassia family, all of which are natives of tropical America or the West Indies. The wood and bark are used as medicine. Cabinet-wood made from it is safe from all attacks of insects.
