MONODY, ON THE DEATH OF MISS E. RICHARDSON.
Adieu, gentle maid, while meek friendship deploresIn strains of despair thine untimely decline,And love, as remembrance thine image restores,Embalms with its tears every feature divine;
Thy virtues, matured in affection and grace,Which charmed every care from misfortune's lorn breast,Shall claim from the pensive a sigh, as they traceThe sod, which embosoms a cherub so blest.
Adieu, lovely maid, oft the muse shall repair,O'er thy grave the wild dirges of anguish to sweep,To plant the fresh blossom and sprinkle it there,And hymn the kind spirit, that taught her to weep.1802.
