The death has taken pace at Crowborough, at the age of 86, of Mr. John Dennis, who, 20 years ago was well known as a critic and was a frequent contributor to the Athenæum, the spectator, and other journals.

Among Mr. Dennis's best-known publications were "Studies in English Literature," "The Age of Pope," "English Sonnets: A Selection," "Robert Southey: His Life Told in his Letters, and "English Lyrics from Shakespeare to Milton." He also edited the Aldine edition of "Scott's Poetical Works" and "The Chiswick Shakespeare."
