Death of Mrs. Huxley
Her last published poem.
We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Huxley, widow of the Right Hon. Thomas Henry Huxley, which took place yesterday morning at Hodeslea, Eastbourne, in her 89th year.
As stated in our memoir, a poem by Mrs. Huxley, which she wrote a week or two ago, appears in the current issue of the English Review. The opening stanza is as follows:—
Far away in the distance, with longing and rapture heart-free,
As a girl I gazed right away, where the heaven touched the sea,
I wished for the wings of a swallow to get to the Great Beyond,
And so at the last discover should to my soul respond,
The key to my dearest wishes, the full cup of desire,
The reaching to high ambition, till I could get no higher,
The finding ideal love in one man's kindred soul,
The love that makes the breakings of life a thing to thole.
A memoir of Mrs. Huxley appears on page 12.
