Mr. Chewton Atchley

Mr. Chewton Atchley, C.M.G., I.S.O., who was for many years librarian at the Colonial Office, died in Friday in London, aged 72. The son of William Henry Atchley, formerly of the Treasury, he entered the Colonial Office in 1868, and served in the Chief Clerk's, Accountant's, and General Departments. In 1880 he was made superintendent of the library, and librarian in 1900. As he retired in 1915, his official connexion with the library lasted for 35 years. Mr. Atchley was a member of the Library Committee of the Imperial Institute. He edited the second volume covering the West Indies, of Sir Charles Lucas's "Historical Geography of the British Colonies," of which a second edition appeared in 1905, and he contributed numerous memoirs in the second supplement of to the Dictionary of National Biography. He received the I.S.O. in 1902 and the C.M.G. in 1911. In 1879 he married Alice, daughter of Henry Whitehouse, of Highgate, and leaves a son and a daughter.
