The QUEEN of the MAY.

Stern winter has left us, the trees are in bloom,
While cowslips & vi'lets the meadows perfume,
While kids are a sporting, and birds fill the spray,
I wait but for Jeany the Queen of the May.

Among the young lilies with Jeany I stray'd,
Pinks woodbin and lilies I'll bring to the maid,
While time sweetly smelling, and lavender gay,
A posey I'll form for the Queen of the May.

O Jockey I fear you intend to beguile,
When seated with Molly last night on the stile,
You vow'd that you lov'd for ever and ay,
Forgetting poor Jeany the Queen of the May.

Young Willie is handsome in shepherds green dress
Who gave you these ribbons that hang at your breast,
Besides these sweet kisses among the new hay,
Was that done like Jeany the Queen of the May.

Those garlands of roses no longer I'll prize,
Since Jeany's no longer the Queen of the May,
The flowers that's a blooming will instant decay,
Since Jeany's no longer the Queen of the May.

Believe me dear madam, your shepherd you wrong,
Your name is for ever the theme of my song,
From the dew of pale eve to the dawn of the day,
I'll sing but of Jeany my Queen of the May.

Come all you young lovers, I pray you draw near,
Avoid all suspicions whate'er doth appear,
O trust not your eyes, lest your peace they betray,
So come my dear Jockey and hail the new May.

Amongst balmy comforts what transports I view,
My thoughts are all wishes since Jockey proves true,
And to your blyth shepherds those news now convey,
That Jeany alone is crown'd Queen of the May.
