Text

And it was, when her soul left, for she was dying, that she called his name Ben-Oni, but his father called him Binyamin.

וַיְהִי בְּצֵאת נַפְשָׁהּ כִּי מֵתָה וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ בֶּן אוֹנִי וְאָבִיו קָרָא לוֹ בִנְיָמִין.

Son of my suffering:	בן צערי:
Binyamin	בִנְיָמִין
It seems, in my eyes, that [he was named thus] since he was the only one [of Yaacov’s sons] to have been born in the land of Canaan, since [the death of Rachel] was in the desert that when one comes from Aram Naharayim [he travels through it], as it says, “In the Negev, in the land of Canaan.” (Deuteronomy 33:40) and “…set out and travelled to the Negev.” (Genesis 12:9):	נראה בעיני לפי שהוא לבדו נולד בארץ כנען, שהיא בנגב כשאדם בא מארם נהריים, כמו שנאמר (במדבר לג מ) בנגב בארץ כנען, (לעיל יב ט) הלוך ונסוע הנגבה:

Binyamin	בִנְיָמִין
Son of his old age. Son of days [In the original Hebrew, this is “Ben Yamim”]. This is like, “To the end of days” (לקץ הימין) (Daniel 12:13) [with days in this case being spelt with the letter "ן" as opposed to "ם", just like at the end of “בנימין”] which means the same thing as “the days” (הימים) [spelt with a “ם“ at the end of the word, but meaning the same].	בן זקונים. בן ימים. כמו: לקץ הימין כמו הימים.
