Hebrew Text

[edit]
כל שיש בה
ידיעה בתחילה, וידיעה בסוף, והעלם בינתיים –
הרי זה בעולה ויורד.
אם יש בה ידיעה בתחילה, ואין בה ידיעה בסוף –
השעיר הנעשה בפנים ויום הכיפורים תולה;
עד שתיוודע לו, ויביא בעולה ויורד.

English Translation

[edit]
Any [sin while impure] that has
recognition at the beginning, and recognition at the end, and unawareness in between –
this is [atoned for] by a variable sin-offering.
If it has recognition at the beginning, and no recognition at the end –
the he-goat which [has its blood service] performed Inside and the Day of Atonement defer it;
until it becomes known to him, and he brings a variable sin-offering.

Explanation

[edit]

sin while impure: The case at hand is where one has sinned by entering the Temple or eating consecrated food while ritually impure, but only realized his ritual state at a later time.

variable sin-offering: This is a sin-offering has several possible configurations, depending on the financial state of the offerer. It may be either 1) a female sheep or goat; 2) a pair of turtledoves or doves, one of which is a sin offering, the other a burnt-offering; 3) a tenth-ephah of fine flour (see Leviticus 5:1-14)

Inside: Inside the Temple's Holy of Holies, where the Holy Ark is kept. This sin-offering is among the most sacred of those brought on Yom Kippur.

the Day of Atonement: Yom Kippur. The day itself is a vehicle of atonement.
