Introduction

The first Mishnah in this tractate lists acts that may not be done with Maaser Sheni produce. Doing these would be showing disrespect to the sanctity of the Maaser Sheni.

מעשר שני אין מוכרים אותו, ואין ממשכנין אותו, ואין מחליפים אותו, ולא שוקלין כגדו, ולא יאמר אדם לחברו בירושלים, "הילך יין ותן לי שמן." וכן שאר כל הפירות. אבל נותנין זה לזה מתנת חנם

English Translation

Fruits of the second tithe may not be sold, taken as security for a loan, traded, or used as a weight. A person may not say to his friend in Jerusalem, "Here is wine and give me oil," and similarly with other types of fruit, but people may give it to each other as a free gift.
