Introduction

[The verse states: “When you come to the Land and you plant any food tree, you must surely block its fruit (from use); it must be blocked to you for three years, not to be eaten” (Leviticus 19:23). This fruit is referred to as "orlah" or blocked.] This first mishnah gets into personal property and exemptions.

הנוטע לסייג ולקורות, פטור מן העורלה. רבי יוסי אומר, אפילו אמר הפנימי למאכל והחיצון לסייג--הפנימי חייב, והחיצון פטור.

English Translation

(1) If one plants [a tree] to serve as a fence, or, for [its wood to be used as] beams [since it was not meant as a food tree] it is exempt from the laws of orlah. Rabbi Yose says: Even if he intended the inner side [facing his house] to be for fruit and the outer side [facing the street] to be a fence, [though its one tree] the inside fruit is subject while the outside is not..
