Literal English Translation Original Latin Line

Until now I have lived fit for girls
and I have campaigned not without glory;
now this temple wall, which guards
the left flank of seaborn Venus,
will hold my lyre, retired from war, and
my weapons. Here, here place the light
tapers and crowbars and bows
which threatened opposing doors.
O goddess, who holds blessed Cyprus
and Memphis free from Sithonian snow,
queen, raise your whip and
strike arrogant Chloe once.

vixi puellis nuper idoneus
et militavi non sine gloria;
nunc arma defunctumque bello
barbiton hic paries habebit,
laevum marinae qui Veneris latus
custodit. Hic, hic ponite lucida
funalia et vectis et arcus
oppositis foribus minacis.
o quae beatam diva tenes Cyprum et
Memphin carentem Sithonia nive,
regina, sublimi flagello
tange Chloen semel arrogantem.
