28: Laws of Removing the Tefillin

1 A person should regularly touch the tefillin so that he should not become distracted from them. And he should touch the shel yad first. And when he will say "וקשרתם לאות על ידך", he should touch the shel yad; and when he will say "והיו לטוטפות בין עיניך", he should touch the shel rosh.

2 One should remove the shel rosh first since the words "והיו לטוטפות בין עיניך" indicate that the entire time that they are between your eyes, there should be two. The tefillin shel rosh should be removed while standing. One should place the shel yad in the bag on the shel rosh so that when he will come to put hem on, he will reach the shel yad first.

3 The custom of the scholars is to kiss the tefillin when putting them on and when taking them off.
