Kaloyannis's Signs
On a hut they hung up this sign :
GROCER'S SHOP
BAKERY
MARKET GARDENER
AND MANY OTHER SHOPS
Kaloyannis was right to put up these signs because the whole market was inside. They had a bag of rice, a bag of small lentils, one of potatoes, two cans of oil, a little sugar and five cheeses.
Somewhere else on a pine tree hung the sign :
GRAND CAFE GOOD CHEER
DINING ROOM
THEATRE UPSTAIRS
On another tree was written
ABATTOIR
This was on a pine tree very far away as the abattoir is always found outside the town.
There it was, a little city. What was missing? Just a Town Hall, a High Street, a few policemen and a brass band. And yet, for this last one, the cicadas were there.
