Translation talk:Deuteronomy
Add topicSources, 3, 9
[edit]For Deuteronomy 3 and 9, which I'm translating, my source is the traditional Masoretic text, and for translating I've relied on four English public domain translations for help: John Nelson Darby's Translation, the Authorised/Common Version/King James Bible, Young's Literal Translation, and Walter Porter's ACV. In addition, I've used Strong's Concordance and Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Definitions for help with Hebrew. When really stumped, I've turned for assistance to the Septuagint Greek Text and its translation by Brenton, and to the Vulgate and its Douay-Rheims translation. [edit]For chapter 10, I've used the Masoretic Text as my baseline, and made no text-critical decisions. I borrowed freely from the King James Version whenever it seemed useful, and looked things up in Gesenius' Lexicon whenever I didn't know a word. Alephb (talk) 03:42, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
I am relying frequently on S. R. Driver's commentary on Genesis Deuteronomy, which is now in the public domain, so I've freely borrowed things from him whenever it seems useful. Alephb (talk) 13:43, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
I retranslated 18:4, because whoever did it in the first place gave no sources. Out of an abundance of caution (and because it was one little verse) I simply redid it, so that we now know fully who used what to produce the whole chapter. Alephb (talk) 16:42, 22 June 2017 (UTC)
General policy for all these chapters (and any chapters I've translated elsewhere): I never deviate from the Masoretic Text unless I note it in the footnotes. Alephb (talk) 12:34, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

[edit]The current poem, 1-8 are from the earlier translation, by me, from the clementine vulgate that I was dissatisfied with. 9 to the first part of 14 are from the Wycliffe bible, but versified from(and possibly influenced by) the king James bible, as the edition I'm working from(at http://justincbesterportfolio.000webhostapp.com/WYBIBL.HTM ) is unversified. The second part of 14 and 15 are from the king james bible.
That being said, the translation is poetic(like the original) and doesn't "feel" like any prior translation that I'm aware of. JustinCB (talk) 12:41, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Verses 16 and 17 came from the vulgate and wycliff's translation JustinCB (talk) 12:42, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
18-43 from the KJV JustinCB (talk) 19:10, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
Chapters 5-8
[edit]Nobody has claimed those chapters(fontwords claimed 3 and 9 not 3 through 9). JustinCB (talk) 21:05, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed. By the way, me and you are the only people here translating. Beleg Tal helps with technical stuff, and that seems to be about it lately. I've been working on the assumption that any claims by anyone here who hasn't contributed in the last month are no longer relevant. Alephb (talk) 23:03, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- All right, I've got drafts up for those four chapters. Same sources as I've been using elsewhere. Alephb (talk) 05:28, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
Chapter titles
[edit]I added them but I forgat to add this but for Alephbs strong vengeaunce on random chapters defined arbitrarily the chapters titles are open for deletion in this book and since there are no other people on here the others are open for deleting too and if it makes people annoid they might come back and volonteer again JustinCB (talk) 01:44, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know about "strong vengeaunce." I'm so happy to just have another contributor around that I'd be happy to keep them in if you find them worth it. It's just that, all other things being equal, I'd like them out. Alephb (talk) 03:55, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- They are from another translator's strong vengeaunce(or not) against more sensible modern divisions based on the actual text rather than tradition based on the text and the tradition is sometimes wrong. I will remove them from the other books, too(and I already removed them from the Wycliffite Prologue).

[edit]This chunk isn't done yet. JustinCB (talk) 19:11, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- You wanna do 33 and 34, or should I? Alephb (talk) 23:04, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
I was hoping you'd do that chunk(it starts with a logical break: Moses finishing his song). JustinCB (talk) 02:19, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- Well, I can at least produce a rough draft. Alephb (talk) 02:30, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
Sounds fine(note that the chunk includes 32:44-32:52). JustinCB (talk) 12:39, 11 November 2017 (UTC)
- The chunk is done. Or, more accurately, a rough draft of the chunk is done. Alephb (talk) 04:54, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
That means now we have at least a rough draft through 1 kings chapter 10! JustinCB (talk) 12:36, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- . . . against the Latin and Greek! 23:33, 12 November 2017 (UTC) [This bit was by Alephb] Alephb (talk) 00:42, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
You know as well as I do how much is ACTUALLY translated from Latin and Greek(and it isn't really that much). JustinCB (talk) 17:03, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
- It was an over-complicated attempt at a joke. You said we had a rough draft through 1 kings chapter 10. We actually have a rough draft through 1 samuel chapter 10, but it would be called 1 kings chapter 10 "against the Latin and Greek" (as Wycliff would put it). Alephb (talk) 02:01, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
You had signed it wierd, so I thought it was some kind of trick(at first I thought it was the churlish editor, but I saw you had added it). I probably would a-got it if you hadn't a-signed it like that(and said "against Latins and Greeks"[which is the actual literal translation{I doubt he was clear about the difference between the word for people of a land and the land itself<for example, "theives of Arabs that border Ethiopians" for "theives from Arabia that borders Ethiopia">}]).
