Chap. LXIX.—An Act to authorize the Legislatures of the several Territories to regulate the apportionment of representation, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That it shall be Legislatures to apportion the representation from time to time.
Proviso.competent to the Legislatures of the several Territories, to readjust and apportion the representation in the two branches of their respective bodies in such manner from time to time as may seem to them just and proper: Provided, That the numbers of said bodies as authorized by existing laws shall not be increased.
Justices of the peace, &c. to be elected by the people.Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That justices of the peace, and all general officers of the militia in the several Territories shall be elected by the people in such manner as the respective Legislatures thereof may provide by law.
