Legislation

[edit]

Wikisource:WikiProject_NZ_Law

I'm working on legislative history. Something I think warrants its own Wikimedia sister project like WikiLaw that's been suggested a number of times through the years, but for now is best placed here on Wikisource.

Legislation has been uploaded to Wikisource a fair bit, but It's necessary that Wikisource remain static, but we can adapt to the dynamic nature of legislation and create a source where all law is presented in a consistent, user-friendly, free, and readable format.

See discussion: Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2020-09#Legislation_and_Version_History

If a consensus is reached on how legislation in general could be presented, could look to convert other legislation into this format.

Originally started uploading scans, i.e.: Pensions Act 1849, however ceased at this stage as links between sections is easier without index scans. For now just leaving a source in discussion page until find a way of presenting easy hyperlinks both on the transcluded page and the source page.

Structuring content in this format, e.g. Social Security Acts:

*Optional, this could be a page that links to the various Social Security Acts, 1938, 1964, 2018, and potentially other predecessor/successor acts. Currently this page is used by the U.S. act of the same name.

Pages such as Social Security Act 2018 will be a version page that includes all versions of the act and a TOC that will go to a versions page of each section.

To make maintaining a versions page for each individual section manageable, will be using dynamic page lists.

i.e.

<DynamicPageList>
category=Social Security Act 2018/Section 8 (Or {{PAGENAME}})
mode=none
order=ascending
</DynamicPageList>

Creates: No pages meet these criteria.

This can be set-up to be in the order they were added to the category, which is ideal if working from the original legislation and adding new ones. But if adding an older one, adjustments will be needed.

Templates

[edit]

Created a number of templates to assist with this project.

{{Law-pAct-t}}: This creates the template for the coat of arms and act information at the beginning of an act.

{{Law/pAct/s/start}} {{Law/pAct/s/end}}: Start and end a section.

{{Law/pAct/s/heading}}: Section header

{{Law/pAct/s/notes}}: Section notes

{{Law/pAct/subs/start}} {{Law/pAct/subs/end}}: Start and end a subsection.

{{Law/pAct/para/start}} {{Law/pAct/para/end}}: Start and end a paragraph.

{{Law/pAct/subpara/start}} {{Law/pAct/subpara/end}}: Start and end a subparagraph.

Some of the above are identical templates, but structuring the tags this way makes the acts more machine readable, allowing subsections to be nested within sections, paragraphs nested in subsections, and subparagraphs nested within parargraphs.

{{Law/pAct/text}}: The text of a subs/para/subpara, placed between a start and end tag from above.

{{Law/pAct/cross-h}}: Cross heading tag, placed between a start and end tag from above.
