OCR errors and corrections

[edit]

I encountered this kind of errors in different pages (on en WS and on sl WS). The document's status was proofread but not yet verified.

What I know about proofreading (from several decades ago, when where i worked, existed a publishing department), differs from what I think is meant by it here. Proofreading I remember was checking and making sure source and printed material were exactly the same (so possible errors in language and typos in source shouldn't be corrected, which by a lector would be corrected (or correction proposed to original author).

Here I see that when status is declared proofread there are OCR (optical character recognition) errors it seems no corrector actually read the document. I spotted errors by finding things like typos, and verified by looking in to the scanned original that correction I made was warranted, but didn't do exactly a proofread (reading both OCR-ed and scanned document with strict attention of comparing word by word and letter to letter.

I intend to go through Page:Plutarch's Lives (Clough, v.1, 1865).djvu/29 and on at least to the end of life of Plutarch, and correct what errors of the type I mentioned above I find while reading, but that won't necessarily mean change of status of that document is warranted (I'll correct what I see while reading and verify the correction against the scan, but won't do actual proofreading litteral comparison of both texts.

Finished for now at Page:Plutarch's Lives (Clough, v.1, 1865).djvu/38 (end of Preface, empty page.
