Add topicHi. Congratulations on what you are doing. From experience I know that transription from MS is often very hard. In view of the eccentric spelling of many of these, I urge you to consider asking to have them locked, otherwise you might find well-meaning people trying to copy-edit them into modern English! Kind regards. Apwoolrich 19:06, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Could I get a bit of help?
[edit]1. I would like to make a new category for The Charles Henry Gauss Family Papers. I looked at the category help, but failed to be enlightened.
2. What does the {{header}} do? I thought it might insert the header template onto a new page; no such luck.
3. If I get these pages locked, can I still edit them? I am trying to get them into some sort of consistent format.
4. Is it possible to redirect one page to another? For instance, a woman's married name to her maiden name, or my real name, which seems to have gotten bracketted somehow (I am honored) to my user id? On second thought, is this the same technique that was used in Wikipedia about 2 years ago, which I have forgotten, but which is probably recoverable? Mathsinger 03:07, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how to answer all your questions but you can find many of your answers by reading the Wikisource help pages. If your can't find it there start reading the Wikipedia help pages. Because people here seldom look at other users talk pages it would be a better idea to ask your questions on the "Requests for assistance" page or on one the administrator's pages.
- You can create a redirect by creating a page and entering something like:
#REDIRECT[[Bar]]
- were Bar is the name of the page you want users redirected to. For example create a page named "Foo" and enter #REDIRECT[[Bar]]. Then if a user searches for "Foo" they will be redirected to the page "Bar" --Inge 07:26, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, Mathsinger, let me try to explain a bit. I'm unsure of what you mean by question 1, so I will skip it, although for categories, I can't see why you just can't add a category that's related to the work (our categorization scheme just got completely revamped, so I'm a bit new to the new scheme myself, but I'll take a look at those pages and see what I can do to help).
- 2. Adding {{header}} to a page is not enough to add the actual template. There are certain parameters for this template which must be added to give any sort of meaning to the template. Go to Template talk:Header to read what the parameters are and how they work. Also, you can add a certain code to you Monobook.js that will automatically insert the template and all of its parameters onto the page, so you don't have to remember what they are every time you use it.
- 3. If the pages become locked, only users with sysop priveleges will be able to edit them.
- I hope this helps a bit.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 17:38, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Edit to Template:Author
[edit]Hi, I'm just another user here. I noticed that you edited Template:Author. This is a really bad idea as it affects all Author pages on Wikisource. I was sure that was not what you wanted to do so I changed it back to it's original condition. If you need help contact me or I am sure one of the admin would be willing to answer your questions. --Inge 07:01, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. I had no idea that I edited any template....wish I know how I did it, so I could avoid it in future. Mathsinger 07:36, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi there, as this is an index of works rather than a work itself, I've moved the page to Portal:The Charles Henry Gauss Family Papers. I've also moved Charles Henry Gauss Collection Letters to Portal:The Charles Henry Gauss Family Papers/Letters, that way everything's in the same place and it doesn't get confused with something else.
