and {{gap|0.5em}}
give the same effect for me but they might not match the width of a digit if anybody manages to set their font to something other than Arial. {{phantom|0}}
seems to me to be the most robust method.--Laverock ( Talk ) 16:35, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
Editing
[edit]I really have to say this, Rochefoucauld — you're doing a lot of great work here on WS. I haven't worked much with you, but I can see that you're really good at this. Great work, and all the best! —Clockery Fairfeld (talk) 05:15, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! I really appreciate the comment and encouragement. I'm sure will run into each other in the future. Rochefoucauld (talk) 16:03, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- At the rate at which you're going, I'm sure we will. —Clockery Fairfeld (talk) 16:54, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'm into Psychology so I plan on eventually doing projects of uploading "Journal of Experimental Psychology" and "Journal of Educational Psychology" if that seems to interest you. Since they're journals I'm probably going to need to make them wikiprojects. I also start school and work this week so who knows how much time I'll have in the upcoming future. Rochefoucauld (talk) 17:13, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'll be free in about a week, so let me know when you'll be starting. I was looking for some work to do anyway. :)
- On an unrelated topic, is this person any relation of yours? Just asking. ;) —Clockery Fairfeld (talk) 14:16, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- No he's not, I'm just an admirer. Rochefoucauld (talk) 19:20, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Clockery, you are indeed, doing good work. I like your image work because in b/w they are looking very good. Too, I majored in Psychology and later in Cultural Anthropology when in various universities (decades ago now). Kindest regards, —Maury (talk) 20:30, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, about that, if you notice I made a few transparent, to the ones that worked well, this allows it to look better on different backgrounds. I can either keep doing this to the ones that work well, or I can make them all with a white background for consistency, It's really up to you. Rochefoucauld (talk) 22:36, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- The ones I have seen looked good but since you are editing them I would like to suggest that you do whichever you can do best so that the images will look their best. Your user name is interesting too. I think cauld is old British for "cold". I know people named Cauldwell (cold well). Clockery, in the above statements, is also right about you working fast. Kindest regards, —Maury (talk) 01:08, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Rochefoucauld, I have been thinking of what you have asked me above. Please take a look at the following work I did on ships. https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Clipper_Ship_Era/Chapter_14 —Maury (talk) 16:06, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- I see, thank you for the examples. Rochefoucauld (talk) 17:01, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- Rochefoucauld, how soon do you think you can have the rest of the images completed for History of Yachting? I wish to get the book completed. Most all of the book needs Validating and I cannot do that because I edited/proofread the pages. Kindest regards, —Maury (talk) 09:17, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- To give you an ETA, I'd say probably all be done and uploaded by the end of tomorrow. Rochefoucauld (talk) 12:39, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Rochefoucauld, would you please finish up the editing on the book that you did the images on? I think there are only a few pages to work on and one of them I remember has a short list of boats. I am busy working on a new book about New Zealand for beeswxcandle. —Maury (talk) 22:30, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, I can definitely do that.
Rochefoucauld, moments ago you completed a page of Native Flowers of New Zealand and I have validated it. Would you please consider doing some more of those pages? That is a rare book that would cost $650 according to administrator Beeswaxcandle who lives there in New Zealand. To get it placed on en.WS is a very good achievement since not even the libraries in New Zealand have this book except one and it is in the rare books division, old and foxed and a person cannot check it out of that section. Hoping to see you there and looking forward to working with you there. I ask you because you are very good in what you do. Respectfully, —Maury (talk) 04:05, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. I will definitely contribute my expertise. —Rochefoucauld (talk) 00:40, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Nice to collaborate with you on this book. On page 331, I've done a test with hi rather than gap. What do you think about this? Zil (talk) 23:07, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
- I love it. Wish I new about that. Learn something new everyday. Would you mind if I cleaned up the table of contents? Add the dots and stuff? — Rochefoucauld (talk) 00:14, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- Others observe and learn something new too. Good work by the both of you. Best, —Maury (talk) 00:23, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- Feel free to do whatever you want. If I don't like something, it's always possible to discuss, modify, revert... Zil (talk) 05:29, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Question/Reconciliation
[edit]Hello.
I clearly got off on the wrong foot with you regarding the scriptorium debacle. However, let me please use this example to (I genuinely hope) clear the air. I pretend to be no kind of expert in copyright; so expect to learn things as we proceed here as well.
You recently tagged File:A Hittite Prince Hunting.png to be moved to Commons. Whilst I accept that at one level, I remain uncomfortable with the fact that the author of the 1914 publication containing this image died in 1936; which (as I understand—please correct me) makes it possibly ineligible (as we have no way of proving the artistic provenance of the image itself!) to be accepted at Commons.
Do you see what a total pain the backside this whole issue is? Thus my complaint that it has not been adequately thought out before being shoved in front of the volunteers and wasting all of our efforts?
Now even the basic research required to compose this note wasted between 5 and 10 minutes of my life I will not see again. This is what makes me so very angry about this matter. It really isn't aimed at you, and I am sorry if you took it that way. User:Prosfilaes on the other hand has been around long enough to know so much better and is entirely deserving of my comprehensive disdain. AuFCL (talk) 00:09, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- No need for an apology, but thank you for taking 5-10 minutes of your life in expressing your disdain. I apologize for my sarcastic response toward you. Because I am also inept in copy right laws I think a modified version of {{Do not move to Commons}} is in order. I think this will clarify issues. Please let me know what you think. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 00:31, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- What I think? I think it was a waste of time approaching you as you have clearly prejudged me and found me wanting. I can live with that and may the matter rest there. I shall not bother you further. AuFCL (talk) 01:12, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Want to pull the imagges for this? Archive.org has the original jp2 scans (https://ia902608.us.archive.org/20/items/evolutionofworld00lowerich/evolutionofworld00lowerich_raw_jp2.zip), which Ifranview can open up very easily once extracted.
The images though will need some careful cleanup before upload to Commons. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:50, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can do.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 20:07, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: Images will be uploaded to Category:The Evolution of Worlds. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 02:08, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'll see what I can do.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 20:07, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks -
This leaves
- Page:The evolution of worlds - Lowell.djvu/236 The table should be in the caption really, think there'a another like this elsewhere :( ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:53, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:53, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: I see the edit at Page:The evolution of worlds - Lowell.djvu/107 is satisfactory; as regards to Page:The evolution of worlds - Lowell.djvu/236 did you want the words in the image or just leave as is? --Rochefoucauld (talk) 23:59, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
- 236 is OK, just not sure why FI does not like inlined tables using {{!}}ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:46, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Images
[edit]- Page:Athletics_and_Manly_Sport_(1890).djvu/82 Was this omitted because of a lack of a good scan?ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:16, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: No, I must of forgot it; The extraction process is very tricky as i'm extracting it from Internet Archive identifier: athleticsmanlysp00orei because it contains all images. Images are extracted from a different scan and the page numbers are extremely difficult and make in very confusing, so it's going to take some time. Thank you for letting me know. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 23:18, 16 December 2014 (UTC) Oh I see what i did now I named it the wrong name...dvju/80 belongs on djvu 82.. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 23:21, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
2 more image pages... Can I leave this in your capable hands?
Would also appreciate you tweaking the sizing on the ones I added. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:57, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks:) 00:34, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
As you seem to know what to do any chance you could do some work on the Cutter's Practical Guide? Which has been stuck waiting for images for at least 2 years or so... 00:35, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- hmm..looks interesting. I'm trying to figure out how I would go about the clustered images such as...https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=File:The_Cutter%27s_Practical_Guide_1898_Edition_Part_1.djvu&page=102 would it be better off making it all one file or individual? Also I noticed that the quality of scan is really bad and that someone started making svg files of the image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:The_Cutter%27s_Practical_Guide,_1898_-_Part_1 which probably took them 2 hours for each image...I can see why it was abandoned. I don't know. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 01:35, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- The original scans are here :- http://www.costumes.org/index.php/History100pages1893to1898cuttersguide, It might be worth making a new djvu with the higher quality versions.
Namely - http://www.costumes.org/index.php/File:Victorian1898cutterspracticalguidepart164.jpg to File:Victorian1898cutterspracticalguidepart1101.jpg
The source site is now a wiki, so if there's an autmoated tool for grabbing a large number of files.... ;) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:36, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Single image plates would be acceptable, The thought behind SVG was to try and get these into being usable patterns again, but that's a much longer-term project (And commons doesn't support DXF :( )
Cutters Practical Guide to the cutting of ladies garments
[edit]Index:The cutters' practical guide to the cutting of ladies' garments.djvu This one is ex archive.org - Full scans here - https://ia701205.us.archive.org/15/items/cutterspractical00vinc/cutterspractical00vinc_jp2.zip ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:44, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
It would be reasonable to ask on the Scriptorium if anyone can produce a DJVU for the other volumes on the costumes.org site. No text, but the OCR here should suffice. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:44, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
- Perfect thanks.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 12:43, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: I'm currently uploading ladies garments. I will not be contributing anymore to the series because it is a mess and there is no authoritative source on the volumes and dates of the publications. I refuse to contribute any more to such a mess... --Rochefoucauld (talk) 02:03, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
- The cutters' practical guide to the cutting of ladies' garments --Rochefoucauld (talk) 02:19, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
- On the former - I quite understand.
- On the latter - Thanks :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:45, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
- Page:The cutters' practical guide to the cutting of ladies' garments.djvu/106 was seemingly overlooked? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:59, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
- totally forgot about the adverts ill finish those off. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 13:52, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
Image Extraction task =
[edit]Index : Index:String Figures and How to Make Them.djvu Category : String Figures and How to Make Them (1906)
Any thoughts? (NB We only have the djvu on this.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:26, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
- If I was to extract the images from the djvu version the images would be greatly distorted. (Example). On the other-other hand the images are rendered better on the 1906 edition(pdf) in google books but the photographs in that edition aren't as good...Also it's a collection of 860+ Figs.; It's doable but would take some time. On the other hand using the 1906 version would produce better results than from a website that's already tried to transcribe the source.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 01:09, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
== Hmm
- Hmmm- worth asking on scriptorium for an opinion I think .. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:16, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
New Dressmaker (Images)
[edit]Whilst we seek opinion on the former item,
Sometime in the new year? ( Methinks there should be a noticebaord for image extraction queues like this.)
Meanwhile , Best of Season to you. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:24, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: Will be uploading to here: c:Category:The New Dressmaker, 1921 --Rochefoucauld (talk) 03:54, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Publisher Imprints
[edit]User:Rochefoucauld/Publishing Companies - Good work:) Any plans to propogate the imprints back to portals?ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:38, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, publication portals need a lot of work, in time, I just want to gather various printer marks used in text for now. Eventually i'd like to expand into portals. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 14:43, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Only 1 image is holding this back from Validation, the other is an imprint which is easily added, from your archive. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:55, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
We haven't previously conversed
[edit]Hi. Seen you around editing though we haven't crossed paths. I was welcoming and assisting a new contributor and they asked me about a reversion to an edit. While I could see some components of the edit that may differ from style guide, I didn't understand a revert for the good components. Anyway, thought that I would point out the question that was asked of me, rather than it sit there in isolation. And a belated welcome from me. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:27, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
- thanks for the notification.--Rochefoucauld (talk) 00:21, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
PSM authors
[edit]Thanks for you additions and corrections to the authors names. Personally, I use the full name in the display segment of the link even if it's not so in the Page namespace. The reason being is to provide the reader instant information.— Ineuw talk 06:46, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, I think I might adopt this method for articles in the The American Journal of Psychology. --Rochefoucauld (talk) 13:12, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi can you comment here on whether the images you extracted should be inlined? see Talk:Fancy dresses described/A
I hadn't initally inlined them because given the arrangment used it looked ugly in the text flow (especially as at the time the images hadn't been extracted.
User:Billinghurst who was doing a lot of transclusion stuff recently suggested in-lining them and I'd like a third opinion either way. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:59, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

1922 Harper and Brothers Mark
[edit]Hey Rochefoucauld,
I hope you don't mind, I altered your Publisher's Marks page and added the 1922 Harper and Brothers mark from the Man Who Knew Too Much.
Best.
