APRIL LIEDER

I
When I rose up in the morning
In a ruined town in France,
I heard the sparrows twitter
In gardens bare and grey
And watched the sunbeams dance.

O glad young April day!

II
When I lie down this evening
In a damp cellar of France
I'll hear the big guns booming
By bare and blasted lanes,
And watch the shrapnel dance.

O wild sad April rains!
