APRIL LIEDER

IWhen I rose up in the morningIn a ruined town in France,I heard the sparrows twitterIn gardens bare and greyAnd watched the sunbeams dance.
O glad young April day!
IIWhen I lie down this eveningIn a damp cellar of FranceI'll hear the big guns boomingBy bare and blasted lanes,And watch the shrapnel dance.
O wild sad April rains!
