Legation, Peking, 1889; Chinese Secretary, 1891; Consul-General, Corea, 1896-1898; Charge d’Affaires, 1898-1901; Minister Resident at Seoul, July, 1901; was withdawn from post when Japanese Protectorate was proclaimed over Corea, Feb., 1906; proceeded to England and whilst there appointed Minister at Peking, May, 1906.
