WRIGHT, Luke E. (TOKYO), Ambassador for U.S.A.; b. 1847, at Tennessee. For eight years was Attorney General of Tennessee; was appointed Vice-Governer of the Philippine Islands and, in 1903, became head of the administration in succession to Mr. Taft; retired, 1905; appointed first American Ambassador to Japan, 1906, and assumed duties, May, 1906.
