Adminship

This page provides information related to administrator access on Wikisource.

Administrators are Wikisourcers who have Sysop rights. This means that administrators have access and rights above and beyond the range of normal Wikisource contributors. The added rights generally fall into two categories: maintenance and fighting vandalism. Currently, Wikisource grants administrator access to those members who are known in the community and whose edits and contributions have proven trustworthy.

Administrator rights

The wiki software has a few important features that are restricted. Of those restricted features, administrators have access to the following tools. Note that this is just an overview; for more information, instructions, and notes, see mw:Manual:Administrators, and actual rights as the system specifies them at Special:ListGroupRights#sysop

Edit protected pages

  • Edit the Main Page and other protected pages. Changes can be suggested at Talk:Main Page.
  • Protect and unprotect pages. Pages are only protected according to our protection policy.
  • Admins can change the text of the interface by editing the pages in the "MediaWiki" namespace. A list of these are found at Special:Allmessages. This includes the text at the left side of pages such as the "Special:Whatlinkshere" and the page that a blocked user will see when they try to edit a page (MediaWiki:Blockedtext).
  • Admins can also edit the style of the interface by changing the CSS in the monobook stylesheet at MediaWiki:Common.css.

Deletion

  • Delete pages and their history. For information and guidelines, see both our deletion policy for items that qualify for speedy deletion and Wikisource:Proposed deletions to discuss deletions that do not. Sometimes deletion is a technical matter, in which a redirection page has to be removed to make way for renaming an article, or a page whose history has been broken up has to be deleted and the pieces recombined. Other times it's a matter of cleaning up simple junk edits on pages with no actual content, or removing material that has been pasted in from another site and infringes copyright.
  • View and restore deleted pages and their history.
  • Delete images. For information and guidelines, see Wikisource:Image use guidelines.

Rollback

  • Revert pages quickly.

Block and unblock

  • Block IP addresses, IP ranges, and user accounts, for a specific time, or indefinitely (or unblock). See Wikisource:Blocking policy for more information on when blocks are appropriate and when they are not. See Special:Ipblocklist for currently blocked addresses and usernames, and the block log.

Other

There are various other actions which only those with administrator privileges can perform:

  • move category pages and other protected pages;
  • view Special:Unwatchedpages to see pages which may be more vulnerable to vandalism;
  • view the history of deleted pages;
  • for limited actions and for limited periods, apply bot users status to their account;
  • allocate autopatrolled status to users.

Obligations of administrators

Administrators are no different than ordinary contributors except for the fact that they have a few added rights. With these rights, however, come a few added responsibilities. Administrators are expected to:

  1. Uphold official Wikisource policy. Most notably they are to keep copyright policy in mind.
  2. Enforce community-wide decisions. Any decision made by the community concerning the operation of Wikisource should be upheld by the active administrators.

Becoming an administrator

Nomination standards

While there are currently no official requirements that must be met, most users keep the following in mind when voting, so it would be very beneficial for nominees to keep these in mind before they request adminship.

  1. Strong edit history.—This means that the user has made a fair number of quality contributions to Wikisource, including adding source texts and supplementary material (e.g., relevant categories/templates) to the text.
  2. Diversity of edits.—The user does not just work with one subject (i.e., they do not solely add sources or solely create templates, etc.), but makes contributions across numerous namespaces.
  3. Discussions.—The user is involved in current discussion/debates going on at Wikisource. The user constantly contributes to the Scriptorium, talk pages ("Wikisource talk:", "Talk:", etc.), and user talk pages.
  4. Follows established Wikisource policy and guidelines.—The user upholds agreed upon Wikisource policies in formatting pages, does not make mass changes that will have a large effect on Wikisource without discussing it with the community, the user is concerned about upholding copyright.
  5. Maintenance.—While adding works to Wikisource is beneficial, another very beneficial contribution is maintenance at Wikisource. The user should help clean up transcriptions, proofread completed works, correct redirects, etc.

Nomination procedure

For users who are interested in either becoming an administrator at Wikisource or nominating another user, add your or the person's user name under "Nominations for adminship" at Wikisource:Administrators. There, a vote will take place, and other Wikisource contributors will support/oppose the nomination and leave comments. The vote will last roughly a week, and at the end a bureaucrat will take the necessary course of action, depending on the consensus. The nomination will then be archived.

Loss of adminship

Adminship may be lost for reasons such as inactivity (use this tool to check), or loss of confidence of the community, and this will be done in accordance with our restricted access policy.
