PADDY the
PELICAN
IN
00:10
Narrator
Hi there, boys and girls! Paddy's friends, Jocko and Mary, have been thrown into a deep, underground dungeon by Pirate Pete. Will Paddy be able to save them? Well, let's find out!
00:13
"PIRATE
PETE"
00:30
Mary
The smoke's getting in here now. Before long, we won't be able to breathe. We certainly can't find any way out of this golden statue.
00:37
Captain Shafto
Smoke rises, so the closer we get to the floor, the longer we'll be able to breathe pure air. So, get down, both of you.
00:44
Jocko
Blimey—a ring like what I used to have on carousels when I was a lad in London. If you drew the brass ring, it meant good luck.
00:51
Captain Shafto
Watch out, Mary! We're falling through the floor of the idle. I don't know where we're going, but we're on our way.
00:59
Mary
We're in a tunnel—must be a secret passage that the medicine man used to get into the golden statue without being seen by the Indians.
01:07
Captain Shafto
I don't know where the tunnel's gonna lead us, but wherever it does, it's gonna be an improvement. That brass ring saved our lives.
01:14
Mary
Oh, this must be the old medicine man's teepee. Oh, we must take Pirate Pete by surprise. Oh, I hope we're not too late to save the Solar Indian chief!
01:23
Mary
Look! Look, Pirate Pete's ruffians are looting the village. They're taking everything that's made of gold. They aren't content with the gold in the mine.
01:31
GOLD MINE
01:31
Pirate Pete
All right, men—everything—everything that's made of gold, toss it into the ship's hold, no matter how large, no matter how small! If it's made of gold, I want it!
01:42
Solar Indian Chief
Have mercy. Gold in mine is enough to make you richest man in world. If you take all possessions, our village be ruined.
01:48
Pirate Pete
What do you think I'm a pirate for, Chief? Whatever I have, I want more, and I don't care what your people need. I must take it to satisfy my greed.
01:58
Captain Shafto
By the great horn spoon, they filled the ship's hold, and now they're pawning gold on the deck. There won't be room for their men if they keep on.
02:04
Captain Shafto
All right, Pirate Pete, you're through! You can't fight me, and keep that cutlass over the Chief's head at the same time. Anyway, you're afraid of me when you're alone!
02:13
Pirate Pete
Shafto! I can't waste any time with you. I have much more important things to do. But to stop any trouble from you again, I'll have you held down by two of my men.
02:21
Jocko
It's no use, Captain! They've hidden our old crew, every bloomin' man, and neither Mary nor I can find a trace of them.
02:29
Pirate Pete
You see, Shafto? You're beaten before you start. Don't match wits with me, because I'm much too smart! And I'll soon be sailing the brawny sea to carry my golden cargo home. And don't try to get back my golden loot. You'd be wasting your time to give pursuit, since I have the fastest ship afloat, and all you have is a no-life boat.
02:51
Solar Indian Chief
Quick! Me know where he hide your men, and all my braves. We must try to stop pirates, before they get away. He make my braves put your men in gold mine, and then he make them follow. Pirate put big rock over mine opening, so the men can't come to our rescue.
03:06
Mary
Oh, thank Heaven they're safe! We can't possibly catch Pirate Pete now. He's already at sea.
03:11
Solar Indian Chief
You take a life boat. You go to the land of Solar Indians. My men use their canoes. We not give up while there's still a chance.
03:19
Captain Shafto
At last, I see the ship! That's Pirate Pete's ship! Why, it's almost over on the horizon. I don't see how we can possibly overtake it.
03:26
Mary
Well, we are gaining on Pirate Pete, Captain Shafto. I can see the ship without looking through the glasses. Why, he must be taking his time.
03:35
Captain Shafto
I can't understand it, Mary. He must see us by this time, as close as we're getting. And the ship's not making any speed at all!
03:41
Mary
Hey, look, he's waving at us! Why, Captain Shafto, I believe he's trying to tell us something. And I have an idea it's nothing we want to hear.
03:49
Pirate Pete
Shafto, your ship is about to sink, and toss my whole crew in the briny drink. And that wouldn't be what I'd call a joke, because I've never learned to swim a stroke.
03:59
Solar Indian Chief
Ah, me glad you no swim. Me enjoy watching you sink in water. Sooner than later, the better I like it.
04:07
Captain Shafto
Don't worry, Pirate Pete. We won't let you drown in spite of what you've done. But you'll have to tuck all your cutlass overboard before we help you.
04:15
Pirate Pete
Here go our weapons in one big shower, so, Captain, you have us in your power.
04:20
Solar Indian Chief
Eh, even without the weapons, they heap bad medicine. Let them go down to the bottom of the sea, with ship. It serve them right to drown.
04:28
Captain Shafto
No, Chief, the pirates can repair the damage they've done in your village. And we can return everything they've taken from you.
04:35
Captain Shafto
All right, you pirates! Jump overboard! Head for the nearest canoe, all of you! We're gonna take you back to the Solar Indian mainland.
04:42
Mary
Captain Shafto, you can't go aboard the ship. It's sinking! You'll lose your life if you try to stay with it. Oh, please, stay here where you're safe!
04:50
Captain Shafto
But the ship isn't sinking now, Mary. I can take it back to the port alone, and without the weight of all the pirates, it'll stay afloat fine.
04:58
Mary
Why, sure enough! It isn't sinking anymore. Oh, there was nothing wrong with Captain Shafto's ship, except that it was overloaded with gold.
05:08
Captain Shafto
You see? Pirate Pete, your greed had the ship sinking. If you'd been content to take only as much gold as you could use, the ship would never have been in trouble. You know, gold is heavy, and the weight of all that gold was more than the ship could carry. Your trouble was all caused by terrible greed. And you're gonna repair every bit of the damage you've done, before the solar Chief lets you leave. Maybe that'll teach you a lesson.
05:31
Pirate Pete
I already see I was a fool, and promise I'll try to end the plight of the Solar Indians. I'll make things right.
05:39
Mary
Oh, my uncle Gabriel will never be able to pay you for everything you've done for us, Captain Shafto.
05:45
Captain Shafto
Hey! There is the pelican, back with us again. Hey, that's the fellow that brought me nothing but luck, and our troubles are over from now on!
