Add topicBabel
[edit]The Babel resources seem to be just getting off the ground here. I've created some "User" categories that were needed (because of existing "User" templates) but had not been created yet, and made some other changes in the categorization scheme (see Category:Babel, Category:User languages — I figure "Babel" can hold the actual "Babel" templates and the more intuitively named "User languages" the actual user pages). Take a look at what I've been doing and comment here and/or begin to help creating and structuring the templates and categories. - dcljr 03:30, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- Ah! The old Wikisource has a full Babel page! (I am never going to get used to this wikisource.org / en.wikisource.org distinction! <g>) Anyway, I guess that page needs to be copied over here... - dcljr 03:38, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- Why do we have Category:User languages? At Commons, its Commons:Category:User. At English Wikibooks, its also Wikibooks:Category:User. --Kernigh 05:20, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
- The relevant cats that were being used most here were Category:User languages and Category:Babel. There was no Category:User or Category:Users, although one template was trying to use the latter. I just went with what seemed best. If others prefer something else, we can switch to that. - dcljr 13:25, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

I do not edit Wikisource much, but I recently did some work with the babel templates at Wikibooks.
The oldwikisource:Wikisource:Babel looks like an old copy of MetaWikipedia:Meta:Babel templates. I would not use it. At Wikibooks, I copied the page from Commons:Commons:Babel. I also had to copy or handle various templates.
Commons (and Meta and oldwikisource) are multilingual, so they need to provide this "Babel" page in several languages. If you read the source of the Babel page at Commons, it includes a template like Commons:Template:Babel list of languages, which then includes templates like Commons:Template:Babel en. At English Wikibooks, I decided that I only needed one Babel page in English, so if you read the source of Wikibooks:Wikibooks:Babel, you will find that I copied things like Babel en instead of using templates.
One consequence of my copying the page from Commons to Wikibooks was that I had to also copy every template from Commons:Babel-1 to Commons:Babel-18. I could have chosen instead to reduce the maximum number "18". --Kernigh 05:15, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
Interproject policy proposal
[edit]There is a proposal at meta:Interproject Babel template standardization (proposal) to standardise Babel templates between projects. You are invited to work and comment. --69.138.228.108 20:33, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Proposition for a unified Babel template
[edit]In noticed that there isn't a unified Babel template, but the old-style templates with a number after the "Babel" (Babel-1, Babel-2, etc). The general thought on all wikiprojects is to replace them with a single Babel template, like the one in w:en:Template:Babel. It uses Parser Functions.
Please share your thoughts on the matter. --Dead3y3 21:38, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Creation of a unified babel thingy
[edit]I added said parser functions to babel template. now [[:template:Babel]] automatically supports up to 10 languages. anyone who speaks more than 10 is probably smart enough to update the template. we should change the wiki source babel page to reflect the simpler template. makes using it seem a little less difficult. I noticed that learning curve at Wikisource is insanely steep. maybe this will help a little bit--Metal.lunchbox 08:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- old babel template is redundant.
