The Young MAN'S DREAM.

To its own Proper Tune.

ONE night I dream’d I lay most easy
down by a murmuring river side,
Where lovely banks were spread with daisies
and the streams did gently glide ;
All around me and quite over,
spreading branches were display’d.
Which interwoven in due order,
soon became a pleasant shade.

In these raptures of delusion,
dull’d with slumber and sweet craft,
I thought I law my lovely Susan,
thro’ the green and blooming trees ;
The moon gave light, I could discern.
how my goddess mov’d along,
Attended by each killing charm,
while the fair one sweetly sang.

You friendly shades of night convey me,
to Adonis, my sweet joy,
You gods and goddesses pray guide me,
to that dear and darling boy;
You noify winds give over blowing,
cease a while that I may hear,
If sweet Adonis be a roving,
in the groves and valleys near.

Then she sat down and tun’d her spinnet,
which made the valleys echo round,
Which wak’d the early lark and linnet,
who in concert join’d the long.
Her tempting dresses my joy increases,
whilst her hair hung dangling down,
Her snow white bread: was almostt naked,
which might engage a monarch’s crown.

Then I fancy’d she drew near me,
with a blooming melting air,
She by her count’nance seem’d to fear me,
and soon repented she came there:
Then I arose and gently seiz’d her,
and in haste bore her away ;
And in my arms I did convey her,
to the arbour where I lay.

She soon reviv’d her sense, and said, sir,
O! you will kill me, I’m undone ;
Why will you smother a harmless maid sir?
pray let me go, sir, I must be gone.
Then in my arms with am’rous kisses,
I caressed the sobbing dame,
But in the height of all these blesses,
alas!. I found it was a dream.
