*KIRK, The or Church of Scotland, is Calvinistic in doctrine, and presbyterian in discipline; and has been so from the time of the celebrated John Knox, the famous Scotch reformer, who flourished in the sixteenth century. The form of their worship is very simple, without a liturgy and without pomp. Scotland contains about nine hundred parishes, and as many benefices; they are provided for by patrons, and not, in general, elective by the people. See Presbyterians.
