THOROLD. (Retired Commander, 1845. f-p., 11; h-p., 34.)
Richard Thorold entered the Royal Naval Academy 14 April, 1802; and embarked, 17 March, 1805, as Midshipman, on board the Belliqueux 64, Capt. Hon. Geo. Byng, stationed in the North Sea. After serving for three years in the Mediterranean, a great part of the time as Master’s Mate, in the Apollo frigate, Capt. Edw. Fellowes, and Ocean 98, flag-ship of Lord Collingwood, he was made Lieutenant, 26 Aug. 1808, into the Minorca 18, Capt. Phipps Hornby, stationed off Cadiz. He was superseded from that vessel in March, 1809; and was subsequently appointed – in June of the same year, to the Inconstant 36, Capt. Edw. Stirling Dickson, at the Cape of Good Hope, whence he returned in July, 1810 – 14 Dec. following, for a few weeks, to the Goshawk sloop, Capt. Edw. Lilburn, at Spithead – 26 Oct. 1811, to the Warrior 74, Capt. Hon. Geo. Byng, stationed in the North Sea and Channel – and, 2 Oct. 1812, to the Pembroke 74, Capt. Jas. Brisbane, employed at first off Brest and then in the Mediterranean, where he fought in Sir Edw. Pellew’s partial action with the Toulon fleet 5 Nov. 1813, assisted at the capture and destruction of a convoy under the guns of Porto Maurizio ll April, 1814, and witnessed the fall of Genoa. He left the Pembroke in Aug. 1814; and accepted his present rank 1 Nov. 1845. Agents – Hallett and Robinson.
