THORP. (Lieutenant, 1838.)
William Thorp entered the Navy 2 April, 1826; passed his examination in 1832; and obtained his commission 28 June, 1838. His succeeding appointments were – 20 June, 1839, to the Gorgon steamer, Capt. Wm. Honyman Henderson, under whom he took part in the operations of 1840 on the coast of Syria, including those against Sidon and St. Jean d’Acre – 27 Aug. 1842, as First-Lieutenant, to the Orestes 18, Capts. Hon. Swynfen Thos. Carnegie, John Jas. Robinson, and Edw. St. Leger Cannon, also in the Mediterranean – 12 Sept. 1844, to the Medea steam-sloop, Capt. Fred. Warden, on the same station – and, 30 July, 1845, again as First, to the Calliope 26, Capt. Edw. Stanley, fitting for the East Indies, whence he returned in 1847. Agent – Joseph Woodhead.
